Snapchat
has come under fire from angry users who have slammed the popular video
messaging app’s new Bob Marley filter for being the digital equivalent
of blackface. The new filter lets users layer reggae legend Bob Marley’s face - along with dreads and hat - over their own. Within minutes of it being rolled out, people had taken to social media to criticise it.
“I’m disgusted by what I’ve seen from @Snapchat, honestly can’t believe this,” one wrote.
Another shared: “So.. there’s a Bob Marley @Snapchat filter. Blackface is now OK, apparently?”
A third said: "This Bob Marley snapchat thing is blackface in 2016 effectively. Digital disrespect.”
People also criticised the fact the filter was launched on 20 April - or 4/20 - a significant date in cannabis culture.
"Bob
Marley was an activist against racism and bigotry who promoted peace,
love and happiness. Why are we reducing his legacy to 420?"
"Bob
Marley is one of the most iconic, influential people in the history of
the music industry. He is not the face of some stoner holiday," said
someone else.
And: "This Bob Marley snap filter is disrespectful to his legacy."
A
Snapchat spokesperson said: “The lens we launched today was created in
partnership with the Bob Marley Estate, and gives people a new way to
share their appreciation for Bob Marley and his music. Millions of
Snapchatters have enjoyed Bob Marley’s music, and we respect his life
and achievements.”
It's also reported they created it in partnership with the Bob Marley estate.
