Police on Tuesday dislodged a notorious armed robbery gang after a gun battle in Enugu. A member of the gang died during the exchange of gunfire, which took place in the Nsukka area of the state.
The armed
robbers had, in the early hours of Tuesday morning, mounted a roadblock
along Nsukka-Markurdi road, where they dispossessed motorists and
passengers of their valuables.
It was gathered that a police team patrolling the area got wind of the robbery and swung into action to dislodge the hoodlums.
But the robbers, on sighting the police
patrol team, engaged the security agents in a gun battle. A member of
the gang was killed while others reportedly escaped with bullet wounds.
The spokesman, Enugu State Police
Command, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the development, said the
injured robber was confirmed dead at an undisclosed hospital.
Another hoodlum, who the police
spokesman identified as Godwin Okpe, from Ogadigbo Local Government Area
of Benue State, was apprehended during the encounter.
Amaraizu said Okpe also sustained
injuries and was receiving treatment at a hospital, adding that the
wounded hoodlum was helping the police in their effort to nab other
members of the gang
Two AK47 rifles, heavy logs of wood used
in blocking the highway and an undisclosed sum of money believed to
have been stolen from their victims were among items reportedly
recovered from the armed robbers.
