World's oldest Cat; Banjo, is 27 years old - and still going strong

Banjo was been dumped at a rescue centre, it is believed to be 27 years old. Banjo – a black and white cat – was abandoned at a West London centre earlier this month.

Although appearing to be in good health, vets were astounded when they scanned his microchip and discovered he was first registered in 1991 when he was two years old – making him 27 or a whopping 125 in cat years.

Carers at the cattery have now contacted the Guinness World Records to see if he is the oldest rescue cat in the country.

Vet checks have shown the veteran feline is in a remarkably good condition, with great health other than a few missing teeth.

Centre manager Beverly Leavy at RSPCA Southall cattery said: “Banjo must have used up all of his nine lives by now.
“He is such a charming sweet old man, he is eating well and enjoying life in the cattery. He takes everything in his stride and has won all of us over. It’s amazing to think he was born decades ago - we think he must be the oldest rescue cat in the country.”

Alice Potter, cat welfare expert at the RSPCA, added: "It’s a great achievement for Banjo to still be healthy. It goes to show that elderly cats shouldn't be overlooked; they still have a lot of life in them and a lot of love to give.”

“Cat’s needs change as they get older so tahe RSPCA would always suggest getting advice from a vet or behaviourist when taking on an older cat.”
