Hannah Koestler decide to share the “grim reality” of the
illness which starved her body down to five stone and left her days from
death. See photos after the cut
The brave 22-year-old posted pictures online of a feeding tube connected to her skeletal body.
And her candid posts have attracted 100,000 followers on Instagram
and a daily deluge of messages from other eating disorder sufferers.
Hannah, who is now recovered, was living off three rice crackers a day.
And though she is 5ft9 tall she was the dress size of a child of 10.
She says: “I know the pictures I shared with the world are graphic, but we shouldn’t shy away from the truth.
“Anorexia
is a cruel illness that ravages the body and mind. I hope my pictures
will deter others from developing eating disorders and inspire those in
their grip to get help. Looking at old pictures always brings back
memories of what happened to me, but I’ve never been happier than I am
now. I want people to know that.”
Hannah, now an engineering
student at Warwick University, believes her anorexia was triggered by
frequent moves as her father worked all over the world in the car
industry. She was born in Austria and spent her childhood in the US,
China, South Korea and Japan.
When she couldn’t control what school she went to or how long friendships lasted, Hannah took solace in controlling her food.
