The Weeknd announced on Wednesday that he's donating $250,000 to the Black Lives Matter movement. The
26-year-old Grammy-winning singer made the announcement days after
donating $38,000 to the University of Toronto to establish an Ethiopian
studies program.
The parents of The Weeknd, born Abel Tesfaye, are from Ethiopia, but raised the performer in Canada.
Enough is enough: The singer last
month tweeted his support for Black Lives Matter following the
officer-involved shooting deaths of black men in Louisiana and Minnesota
He
tweeted on July 7 to his more than 3 million followers: 'enough is
enough. it's time to stand up for this. we can either sit and watch, or
do something about it. the time is now.'
Black
Lives Matter, which advocates for justice and freedom for
African-Americans, was founded in 2013 by Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza
and Opal Tometi.
The organization has garnered attention after rebuking police treatment of minorities.
