The Weeknd donates $250,000 to Black Lives Matter after tweeting his support

The Weeknd announced on Wednesday that he's donating $250,000 to the Black Lives Matter movement. The 26-year-old Grammy-winning singer made the announcement days after donating $38,000 to the University of Toronto to establish an Ethiopian studies program.

The parents of The Weeknd, born Abel Tesfaye, are from Ethiopia, but raised the performer in Canada.

He tweeted on July 7 to his more than 3 million followers: 'enough is enough. it's time to stand up for this. we can either sit and watch, or do something about it. the time is now.'

Black Lives Matter, which advocates for justice and freedom for African-Americans, was founded in 2013 by Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza and Opal Tometi. 
The organization has garnered attention after rebuking police treatment of minorities.
