after he got stuck in a muddy riverbed for more than 12 hours.
The 70-year-old makes a living collecting and selling recyclable waste and got stuck in a muddy riverbed all night as he reached for a single empty water bottle.
The elderly victim, identified only by his surname Ren, was spotted one morning by passers-by who were shocked when they apparently saw two hands sticking out of the muddy riverbed.
According to witness reports, Ren's body or face could not be seen, but his hands were moving slowly as if signalling for help from anyone who passed by in Sunfu Township, in Xuancheng City in East China's Anhui Province.
Local authorities arrived to rescue Ren and had to spend an hour digging him out from the mud, which covered the old man from head to toe.
Two kind passers-by also lent a hand to officers, who successfully carried Ren to dry land before sending him to hospital.
One of the police officers at the scene said: "The old man lay on the ground shaking uncontrollably. He was unable to even say a single word."
The officers were also shocked to learn that Ren had been in the mud for some 12 hours, having attempted to pick up the discarded water bottle the evening before when he became stranded.
Ren was rushed to hospital and is said to be in stable condition.
