Former Sunderland footballer Cabral faces a trial for two counts of rape

A former Sunderland footballer Cabral  faces a trial for the alleged rape of a woman during his time at Sunderland. Cabral - real name Adilson Tavares Varela - allegedly attacked his victim on January 25 last year.

The 27-year-old has since left the North East club and, after a spell in Italy, is currently playing in Switzerland. It is understood the midfielder has been returning to the UK to make appearances at Newcastle Crown Court.

Cabral was born in the Cape Verde Islands but played for the Swiss under-19 and under-21 teams. He later played for Cape Verde's senior side.

He made just one competitive appearance for Sunderland, alongside Johnson, against Fulham on the first day of the 2013/14 season.

Newcastle Crown Court confirmed this morning that his trial is due to begin next month on April 25.
