A billionaire businessman nicknamed “Big Lau” has spent £50 million on two super rare diamonds for his seven-year-old daughter on Thursday. the property tycoon Joseph Lau paid a record-breaking £31.9 million for The Blue Moon Diamond,
a "flawless" 12.03 carat gem with the highest possible grading - which
he has now renamed the Blue Moon of Josephine after his daughter. Just
a day earlier the Hong Kong businessman dubbed “Big Lau” paid £19
million for a pink diamond which he is renaming Sweet Josephine.
The hue on the Blue Moon
is, according to the GIA Monograph who identify and grade rare
diamonds: "likely to have never before been seen within such a large
diamond, or any gemstone".
The GIA added that the colour could
"be indescribable to even the most experienced diamantaire or colour
theorist. Some, however, liken it to the ocean."
David Bennett,
worldwide chairman of Sotheby's international jewellery division,
previously described the Blue Moon as a "simply sensational stone of
perfect colour and purity".
He said: "Weighing in at 12.03 carats, the 'Blue
Moon' diamond is a simply sensational stone of perfect colour and
purity, combined with a superb cushion shape.
"Blue, for me, is
the most mysterious and magical of all the colours of diamond, and the
Blue Moon will now take its place among the most famous gems in the
world."
The auction house added it was the first stone to sell for more than $4 million (£2.6m) per carat.'
