18 year old boy decapitated his mother then calmly walked out of his home holding her head

The boy, Oliver Mauricio Funes Machada, has been charged with first-degree murder after the tragic incident in North Carolina.

Police said the teen dialled 911 himself, although they did not say what he reported.

When officers and paramedics arrived at the scene, they were greeted by the gruesome sight of Machada stood outside his home holding his mother's head.

Machada was also holding a large, butcher's knife and was taken into custody without incident.

Terry Wright, from Franklin County police, told reporters: "Officers encountered the suspect holding a knife and, as reported, also holding his mother's head in the other arm.

"It's tough for the deputies. It's tough for the communities.

"We will be offering any of them assistance who just may need it because it was a horrific scene that first responders had to respond to."

Machada was reportedly taking medication for schizophrenia and psychosis.

He was also said to be a Honduran national and in the country unlawfully.
