Meet the 8 year old who deliver his baby sister when their mum suddenly goes into labour

An eight-year-old boy delivered his baby sister when their mum suddenly went into labour at home.

David Caffery, 42, told son Marcus to stay with his mum Jodie, 38, while he popped outside to find an ambulance.

David returned minutes later to find his son Marcus delivering his own sister Freya.

8 year old Marcus said: “When it started happening it was really frightening and scary.
“I just got on with it because I needed to do this and I couldn’t leave her on her own.
“It felt very weird, because it was happening in my own house and because this wasn’t like another baby - this was my own sister.
“I felt very relieved when she came out, I was just hoping for the paramedics to come.

“I would never ever do it again. Never.
“People are saying when I grow up I should be a paramedic or a midwife, but I’m going to be an astronomer.
“I want nothing to do with that again, I am not delivering babies.”

The dramatic birth happened last week at the Cafferys' home in Wolverhampton, West Mids.

Jodie went into hospital but was discharged after her contractions stopped.

He said: "I don't think it's really sunk in for him. We're so proud of him.
"We couldn't believe how calm he was.
"Marcus was literally on his knees with his hands underneath the baby's body.
"I couldn't believe it. Apart from the baby's feet, he had pretty much delivered her."

She was watching I'm A Celebrity when Freya's head suddenly started to emerge.

College caretaker David phoned for an ambulance and went outside to guide paramedics to his house.

He came back to find Marcus clutching his 8lb 7oz sister in the living room.
After acting as midwife, the schoolboy explained what had happened to younger brother Alexander, one.

David added: "The paramedics arrived and did a brilliant job. They gently moved Marcus to one side and finished delivering Freya.

"Then straight away he went over to his brother and started reading him a book and explaining what was happening. We couldn't believe it. I couldn't have done it.

"I've already told him he's getting a large Christmas present and there will be stuff winging its way to him when we get paid as well. He's already started making his list."

Primary and secondary school teacher Jodie, 37, added: “I’m so proud of him, he did really really well.

“I was on the phone to a paramedic and I passed them over to Marcus.
“He went and got towels and laid them down, then he actually started to deliver his sister.
Mum Jodie said 'Marcus was so calm and collected, it was amazing'
“He had his hands around her and was helping her out. By the time paramedics arrived all but her feet were out.
“He was so calm and collected, it really was amazing.”
