Jose Fernandez, the Major League Baseball star died on Saturday night , was set to become a father. The 24-year-old died along with two others after a boating accident off the coast of Miami Beach.
And his emotional Instagram post from last week has taken on a new, tragic significance after his untimely death.
Fernandez,
who spent a year in jail for trying to escape Cuba as a youth and saved
his mother's life while sailing from Cuba across the Gulf of Mexico,
published a picture of his pregnant girlfriend on Instagram five days
ago that was fittingly captioned "family first."
"I'm so glad you came into my life. I'm ready for where this journey is gonna take us together."
The heartbreaking post has been a magnet for people wishing to pay
their respects to the talented young pitcher whose death has shocked
baseball and American sports.
Cuban-born Fernandez is a two-time
All-Star, meaning he was voted as one of the league's best players in
both 2013 and 2016, and boasted a 100mph fast ball that promised to make
him one of the sport's best pitchers.
In 2013, his first year in
the Major Leagues, Fernandez won the National League rookie of the year
award after a stunning season in which he was among the top 10 pitchers
in Major League Baseball.
Local media reported that a boating
accident off the coast of Miami beach had killed three people in the
early hours of Sunday morning.
Authorities found the boat upside
down after reportedly crashing into rocks, and the Marlins confirmed the
terrible news of Fernandez's tragic demise with a brief statement on
Sunday.
