The Game and Snoop Dogg addressed gang violence in a town hall style
meeting that attracted hundreds of people in Los Angeles. The
Game, born Jayceon Terrell Taylor, publicized the meeting on social
media, inviting leaders of the Crips, Bloods and other gangs to meet at
the Church of Scientology Community Center.
Los
Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck, hip hop artist will.i.am, anti-gang
activists and gang members filled the community center and a large
crowd watched from a live broadcast outside.
Hundreds turned up, including anti-gang activists and gang members amidst heightened racial tensions across the country
The
Game called the meeting 'Time To Unite: United Hoods + Gangs Nation'
through social media on July 14, urging gang members to attend amidst
heightened racial tensions across the country.
He
welcomed gang members 'to have the much needed conversation amongst
ourselves about our influence on the youth in our respective
neighborhoods & how we can serve as better role models to them &
the brothers we stand beside daily'.
'Because
the sad truth that no one wants to face is, before we can get our lives
to matter to anyone else. We have to show that our lives matter to
us!!!!'
Snoop Dogg, Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, and hip hop artist will.i.am were also in attendance.
Outside
the community center, police chief Beck hugged The Game and grasped
hands with the rapper as well as Nation of Islam minister Tony Mohammed.
Beck
said the meeting was a step in the right direction toward peace,
especially considering the police shootings Sunday morning in Baton
Rouge, Louisiana.
'We're
making sure that there's no one-person cars responding to emergency
calls,' Beck said, before adding that all officers will be in uniform
starting Monday as a precaution.
