A Colombian man has admitted to killing his girlfriend with a cable before chopping her into pieces and chucking her remains into a river. Edwin Vasquez Ortiz, 25, is the alleged killer of the victim whose body parts and severed head where found by police dumped in the Mapocho River near Chile's capital of Santiago.
Yuliana
Andrea Acevedo's mutilated body was so unrecognisable, the 21-year-old,
also from Colombia, could only be identified by her tattoos and nails,
police said.
The victim's manicurist recognised her nails and contacted police after they had released a series of pictures of her body. After
an intense investigation, the police officers identified Vasquez as the
prime suspect of the crime and picked him up at the Italian restaurant
where he worked.
His neighbours also described to the authorities
how they often heard violent arguments between the couple, though they
had never imagined it could have spiralled out of control into murder.
After four hours of interrogation by state attorney Ricardo Pena, the young murderer broke down and confessed to the crime.
According
to official sources, Vasquez was 'insanely jealous' and started a
ferocious argument with his girlfriend which ended with him allegedly
strangling her with a cord.
Realising what he had done, it is
reported that he then decided to dispose of the evidence by cutting the
body into pieces and throwing her in the river.
