Kylie Jenner's lip kit nearly broke the internet when it debuted
last month after it sold out in less than 30 minutes, but now the 18-year-old beauty mogul is receiving backlash
for allegedly appropriating the work of another make-up artist for her
brand. The Lip Kit By Kylie Instagram page
shared a photo of metallic rose gold lips dripping with gloss in a way
that strikingly resembles Kylie's brand logo, prompting numerous fashion
outlets to speculate that this was the star's new lip color. A Los Angeles-based make-up artist Vlada Haggerty was quick to point out that the image posted to Kylie's account was in fact her work.
After Vlada voiced outrage over the blatant stealing of her work, Refinery29 reports that Lip Kit By Kylie edited the post to add: 'inspo by @vladamua.'
Kylie's
team then completely removed the post, but outlets who had picked up
the story continued to run Vlada's image along with stories about the
reality star's next lip shade.
Eventually,
the make-up artist posted a screenshot of a Harper's Bazaar article
with the headline: 'Is This Kylie Jenner Next Lip Kit Color?' along with
the caption: 'And the insanity continues.'
She
then mentioned Graftobian Makeup Company, who created the rose gold lip
color, saying: 'What can we do about it? This is your loose metallic
powder in copper mixed with the clear gloss!'
The photo: Make-up pro Vlada Haggerty
posted this image nearly eight months ago, showing work she did
with Graftobian Makeup Company. Kylie's brand posted the same photo
earlier this week with no credit
And
she didn't stop there. On Sunday, Vlada re-posted an Instagram photo
from an artist named Teresa Dias, who drew a version of the rose gold
lips and credited Kylie.
Vlada
captioned the shot: 'To everyone, who comments that I need to "chill
out", "be grateful" and "it's not a big deal", THIS is what will
continue to happen if I don't educate people.
'They
are my lips, my photo, my editing, my home made lipstick color using
@graftobianmakeup Cosmetic Powdered Metal in copper and clear gloss.
She
then addressed the artist directly, writing: 'You are very talented and
an amazing artist, but as a fellow artist, I'm asking you to edit the
caption, I am not involved with @lipkitbykylie in any way.'
