Hollywood star Russell Crowe slams Virgin over 'ridiculous' hoverboard ban

Russell Crowe claims he will never fly with Virgin again after banning hoverboard in their airport. The actor lashed out at Virgin Australia on Twitter, after the airline said his children could not bring their "hoverboards" onto a plane. As a result, they have been banned on a number of airlines including Virgin, Emirates, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and Qantas. see tweets after the cut.

The gadgets - which don't actually hover but self-balance and propel riders around on two wheels at speeds of up to 15mph - were one of the most sought-after toys this Christmas, but have been the subject of a series of safety warnings.

The New Zealand-born actor described the policy as "ridiculous", and vowed never to travel with the airline again, after Virgin staff refused to check-in his children's new toys ahead of a flight from Sydney to Coffs Harbour.

Virgin Australia’s official Twitter account was quick to respond, explaining the reasons for the ban and apologising for the incovenience.
“Hi Russell, due to safety concerns over the lithium ion batteries in hoverboards these have been banned on all major Australian airlines and many around the world,” the company tweeted.
“We’re sorry you were not aware of this prior to check-in today. We hope to see you on board again soon.”

Crowe was not impressed, replying: "Why did you not inform me when I booked my ticket? Where is your duty of responsibility in this?"

He tweeted the same question 11 minutes later, telling the team behind the official account that he was "awaiting your reply".
