Thug repeatedly stabbed teenage boy to death in deadly street fight following 'argument over an iPhone'

A teenage thug repeatedly knifed a man in a deadly street fight which could have been over an iPhone. Montell Stephens, 18, of Smethwick, repeatedly plunged a knife into Sheriff Mbye after they met to settle a dispute. Two others, Rakeem Riley, 18, of no fixed address and Omar Robinson, 21, of Ladywood, were found guilty of aiding and abetting Stephens and of wounding Stephens with intent.

He said Stephens armed himself with a big knife while 19-year-old Mr Mbye and the two other defendants had gone to a shop and bought five blades which were put into a carrier bag.

Jonas Hankin, prosecuting, earlier told the court: “On April 17 this year, to settle an ongoing dispute, perhaps over an iPhone, perhaps not, two young men, encouraged by two others, agreed to fight one another in the street with knives.
“CCTV shows they traded blows, toe to toe, in Lockwood Road, Northfield, off the High Street.
“They did so until each had suffered life-threatening injuries.
“Mr Mbye was to die from his wounds, Stephens miraculously survived.
“It was an agreement to fight at a pre-determined location.
“There is no question of self defence.
“Stephens unlawfully killed Mr Mbye by stabbing him repeatedly.
“Riley and Robinson, by their presence and their actions, encouraged Stephens and Mr Mbye to fight each other, realising they may kill each other.”
