Alysia Montano (left and rop right) came fifth in the 800m behind gold
winner Mariya Savinova-Farnosova and bronze medalist Ekaterina
Poistogova (bottom right) during the London games The are both facing
lifetime bans after a damning World Anti-Doping Agency report suggested
Russia was systematically covering up doping - meaning Montano could
win the bronze. The 29-year-old runner from Queens, New York, said a lot
of athletes 'knew' that it was going on , but didn't have any proof -
so any accusations would have only been 'finger-pointing'.
She also
admitted she was excited at the prospect she could be awarded a medal,
but added: 'You can't ever get back those moments, you can't ever
replace those feelings that I would have been able to experience at the
time.' She revealed on Twitter what medals she is in line to win if the
allegations and proved.
In a Periscope video
released on Monday, she added :
'It's not just the medal, it's not just you being the bronze medalist, silver medalist, gold medalist, but it's about you putting out an honest effort.'I feel for the longest time I tried to not think about it not being fair,' Montano explained. 'I had bouts of just being like, 'Why am I in this sport? I'm not willing to to dope, I'm not willing to cheat, I'm not willing to not approach my goals with ethics.''[But] I knew I put everything, all my effort, energy and time into doing my very best … and I feel like I did that. Obviously I don't have any medals in my hand still, yet, but with the findings, it looks promising and I'm very very hopeful.'
