Court awarded $21.5million to a man after being hit by sliding door on cruise ship

The injury cost a cruise ship company $21.5million (£14.1million) after a set of sliding doors hit a passenger. James Hausman was awarded the huge damages by a jury after a nine-day trial against Holland America. The businessman was on board the M/S Amsterdam with his wife, daughter and her tutor when the accident happened leaving him with a minor brain injury.


The court heard the 61-year-old, who was a gold and precious-metals retailer, still has memory loss, vertigo and seizures as a result of the injury, but did manage to complete the 280-day world cruise.
The Seattle Times reported Mr Hausman’s lawyer, Rick Friedman produced evidence at trial that dozens of other passengers had been injured in similar sliding-door incidents across the Holland America fleet due to faulty sensor settings. 

The jury awarded $21.5 million in damages to the Illinois businessman, of which $16.5 million was punitive damages against Holland America and $5million for past and future pain, suffering and emotional distress.
