Emily is a physically healthy woman with a loving
family and friends with everything to live for, but she finds her life
unbearable. Her mental suffering has led to her repeatedly self harming , trying to kill herself and being committed to a psychiatric clinic. She lives in Belgium which has a liberal policy when it comes to euthanasia allowing not just those with terminal physical illness but with mental illness to opt for death over life. And Emily has been granted that right.
The Belgian Act of Euthanasia says permission
can only be granted if: "The patient is in a medically futile condition
of constant and incurable physical or mental suffering that cannot be
alleviated."
She said:
"It feels like there is a monster behind my rib cage constantly trying to get out.
"Cutting makes you feel you can calm it down and banging your head on the wall makes you think you can beat it.
"But even slamming and hitting can't beat it."
She has been getting psychiatric treatement since she was 12
and after trying to kill herself was committed to a clinic and has been
medication since.
In 2013 in Belgium there were 1,800 doctor assisted deaths of which 3 per cent were people suffering psychiatric disorders.
Belgium
is one of only two countries which allow it and it takes two years to
apply and three doctors must sign off on the death before a lethal
injection is given.
Two years ago Emily made a video in which she confessed:
"I've had enough of all this, nothing gets to me any more, I don't want to live a lie.
"I tried I really tried, but I can't I feel emotion whatever I do it's pointless.
"I can't even look forward in time because I can't picture myself in the future wherever or with whoever, I can't see it at all."
Her mother said Emily told her not to try and stop her wishes from being carried out.
She
said:
"She told me the only way IO could help was to accept it and go along with it, that's the only way I can help my daughter and I want to be there for until the end.
