Gary Neville has has been told to leave Valencia with immediate effect after just four months in charge. The
Englishman took over from Nuno EspĂrito Santo in the autumn as the club
disappointed in both their La Liga and Champions League campaigns.
Indeed, Neville's
first game in charge resulted in Champions League elimination at the
hands of Lyon and the club then went on to record a nine-game winless
streak in the league under his stewardship.
While Valencia
eventually got their first La Liga win under Neville on February 13th,
mixed results followed and the side's agonising elimination from the
Europa League two weeks ago effectively signalled the end of their
season.
Neville, 41, was still intent on earning a long-term deal
to manage the club but mixed results failed to win over the club's
notoriously vociferous support and the Bury-born coach has left by
mutual consent.
The former England defender thanked the club in a statement following his departure.
"I would like to thank Valencia Football Club, the fans, staff and the players," he said.
"I
would have liked to have continued the work I started but understand
that we are in a results business and in the 28 games (W10, D7, L11)
they have not been to my standards or to those which are required by
this club."
Former Liverpool assistant Pako Ayestaran has been named as the head coach for the rest of the season.
