The authorities of the Nigerian Navy, Central Naval Command, with headquarters in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, have acquired over 15 gunboats to fight piracy and pipeline vandalism.

The command vowed to tackle all forms of economic crimes on the Niger Delta waterways, noting that the illegalities had resulted in the damage of strategic oil installations and impacted negatively on the nation’s economy and security.

It assured that with the over 15 gunboats acquired by it, the task of tackling criminalities would be addressed headlong.

Speaking shortly after its three-day operations, codenamed, ‘Exercise Projector’, Flag Officer Commanding, CNC, Rear Admiral Apochi Suleiman, said the Navy was capable of policing the creeks in the region to smoke out criminals

Suleiman said, “There shall be no hideout for these miscreants anymore in our operational domains. Nigeria has over the years been confronted with challenges of curbing illegal oil bunkering, pipeline vandalism in Niger Delta communities.”

On the exercise, the FOC said it was a strategic operation in accordance with the directives of the naval chief, Vice Admiral Ibok Ibas, to smoke out the miscreants and dismantle their hideouts.
Suleiman said the command was mandated to conduct surveillance within its areas of operations, including the creeks.
