Facebook group History In Pictures, which has 1.4million likes, shared this photo of Leonardo DiCaprio and his parents George and Irmelin on their page to celebrate Leo’s win at the Oscars. The
photo, taken in 1976, shows Leo being held up by his parents and is
rather joyous if we do say so (and isn’t the actor the spit of his
mum?).
Only it’s Irmelin’s unshaved armpits that have become the focus of a
huge Facebook debate – with over 7000 comments over the photo to date.
Many of the page’s fans have expressed disgust over Irmelin’s natural look – predictably.
One
wrote: “Hopefully after his oscar win can score himself a wee Gillette
sponsorship and hook his mum up. And for all you greeting wifeys she
should shave cause shes probs got more pit hair than his dad!! Thought
woman wanted equality not to literally be as hairy as men (sic)”.
Another user expressed disgust at the photo, saying: “It's called good hygiene!”
But
Irmelin has had plenty of defenders, too – pointing out that her
natural body is beautiful, and nothing to be ashamed off – or debated
about in the first place.
One said: “Funny how people only ever point out the hygiene argument when the hair is on women”.
Another
wrote: “The comments on this photo is an absolute disgrace, who didn't
know women grew hair under their armpits? fair enough in current society
we shave but back then it wasn't the norm. they were also hippies. “The ignorance on such a normal family photo is disgusting. instead
of focusing on the fact he won an Oscar the attention is more on his
mother over hair.. what has this world come to? (sic)”
With the debate still raging over on the Facebook page, it doesn’t look set to die down any time soon.
